Project Description
When our clients purchased their new home in Kew, they inherited difficult dark spaces, a dilapidated kitchen and a mature garden that you could barely see let alone enjoy! The previous owner was a film set designer so the house had some pretty unusual elements (including a full sized Dalek and futuristic curved silver wall!) so the whole space needed a redesign and a lot of imagination in order to make it into the contemporary home they desired.
Desiring a complete renovation, their brief was to add light and space to the ground floor whilst ensuring this home would compliment their family needs and family lifestyle. And maximising those garden views was also essential!
Achieving planning permission for a ground floor rear and side extension, PAD was able to utilise this now improved space to design a living / dining / kitchen area. The bespoke, minimalist kitchen flows on to the large dining area to allow cooking and eating to be part of the same experience; eating with the kids or friends round for a dinner party. The lounge sits comfortably alongside the dining space allowing for intimacy when required but still being connected to the hub of the home and creating a feeling of openness.
As with all jobs problems crop up. In this property there was an immovable section of masonry (integral to the structure of the home!) in the centre of the open plan living space. Turning this challenge into an opportunity, PAD made a feature out of this central wall and installed a double sided fire place to create a centre point at the heart of the home.
The beautiful mature garden was wasted in the previous configuration of the home so PAD designed a large window box (a perfect little reading corner on a sunny day), two expansive sky lights to flood the space with natural light from above and large floor to ceiling sliding doors to maximise garden access and create that much sought after indoor-outdoor lifestyle. The seamless continuation of the flooring from the dining space to the outdoor patio further enhances this experience; the outside patio functions as a second lounge!
Lush gardens of this size in South West London can be a rare gem and our clients are overjoyed at the focus it now plays in their new and improved home.
This beautiful contemporary home in Richmond has made for a very happy family, and not a Dalek in sight!
The countdown is now on for BBQ season!
